recharging while driving

you know your batteries, better than we do
i would probably run the generator a little and slap them with that 100+ amps, before going to bed

im heavy on the PC, and used the electric blanket last night
charging phones and tablets, every night
but your fridge uses more power than mine

The news here won't stop talking about a huge storm coming down from Canada this weekend. Usually when they hype something this much, this early, it turns out to be nothing.

My two cents would be to double up on that 12volt or better yet go with a couple 6volters and a waaay bigger inverter. Ebay has some great inverter deals.

PT, what was the question? ISTR you don't have a battery AH counter that works, so maybe that would answer. :)

You battery guys told me to let my batteries set overnight before testing the increased voltage from a trip. How-um-so-ever, in a 9 hour drive my batteries went from 50-percent to 100-percent state of charge. So after dry camping for 6days in the summer in conserve mode we got our batteries back to full, in one long drive home.

PT is running an RV fridge using an inverter and his batteries about 300w, electric heat pad in bed at night..etc...
He has good AGM batteries he had an inverter charger that will deliver 125 amps charging to the batteries
But he does have to start a generator to use that devices for charging
That is what I was suggesting
By tomorrow morning his voltage will be either lower or higher than this morning's 12.3v
Then he can decide

What exactly is ypur alternator?

Make of vehicle? Model? If a Ford peer through the holes or slots in the housing. What color insulation on the stator wires? Green? Purple?

About 90% of the motorhomes I check couldn't deliver more then 40 amps to a batteey bank if an H-bomb was tied to the other end. 4-3 cell batteries connected to a 120 amp alt. can use a NUMBER FOUR AMERICAN WIRE GAUGE cable connected to an 80 ampere breaker then through a charge divider like a Sure Power. This cable connects directly to the alternator output stud and nowhere else. It is stacked atop the original cable terminal. Because of the length output would be ultimately limited to around 80 amperes. Do you have enough battery to accept 80 amp charge rate?

And for those who scream about excessive heat. Save your breath. Instead direct your energy at mounting 4' diameter bull horns on your roof so you can drive around Phoenix on a 108F summer eve screaming "you Can't Do That!" Into a microphone.

I thought the problem was the alternator not having the voltage to push a large current into the battery bank? It seems to me vehicles have a rather poor system for charging even the engine battery. The computer doesn't appear to have a decent measurement of the state of charge so it can't charge aggressively and my short-drives-only van is chronically undercharged. The huge amperage capability is a complete waste.
