You are 100% correct
(except maybe that shoe salesman thing :) )My only issue is that the standard auto voltage regulator is not optimized to recharge deep discharge batteries, which is why I recommended a DC-to-DC battery charger.
I think I know what you mean by a "charge divider", but Google does not. Got a link to an example.
