Hi,
Because poorly designed converters may destroy battery banks. It can happen in less than a week.
Since you won't be using a generator to charge, I'd just use the existing converter and stay on top of the conditions. Make your default connection be that the converter is always disconnected. Then there is no risk of a loop.
I would flee from the microsolar unit. Samlex is a proven name and is only $22 more. Use the money you saved on not buying a (fairly inadequate) battery charger.

I don't know why most of you fine folks are so big on converters? I suppose I could keep the converter, but adding an inverter is a must, so I would prefer to get rid of the converter so I don't need to worry about a cycle loop draining my batteries when I'm dry camping.
Alright, I think I'm sold on a PSW. I still don't like the idea of doubling my budget
