Yes, diversion loading has been discussed. There are 12 volt water heater elements available, and at least some MPPT and PWM controllers do diversion loads.
My existing controller only does a puny 2 amps--but with a "chip" upgrade it can do up to 20 amps.
I believe the Rogue does diversion loads, and the PWM Tristar does as well--but NOT the MPPT Tristar. Morningstar apparently has an add on that can be used for diversion loads.
