Replacing stolen battery

Hi boys 'n girls,
Someone stole my battery and left me a little mess. "They" simply cut all of the cables & wires. I have bought a new battery, box & cables, but am not sure how to hook everything back up. There was a wire that was cut very close to the frame, where there appear to be two corroded attach points. Not sure what that is, but it looks like it could use a replacement. Can someone give me a clue, here? :?
  • This might be a good time for others to learn from your misfortune. I think I'll take a photo of my current set up in case it ever happens to me.
  • If you were to post things like how many wires/cables were cut and what the colors were, I bet that the people here could provide better information than simply guesses.

  • Sorry to hear, where did it happen? Home, campground? Disgusting they need to work ,not steal. Don't let it get you down, could happen to anyone.

Like said, if the wire is actually attached to the frame it is a negative/ground wire.

If it is attached to a box like pictured below, it is a positive/hot wire. The device pictured is an auto reset circuit breaker available at any auto parts store.

If your battery wiring followed the standard RV wiring code then BLACK CABLES are POSITIVE +12VDC and WHITE CABLES are NEGATIVE -12VDC.

Some relays are sometimes installed near the battery terminals that controls things like the trailer slide outs, power jacks, roof raise motor in my case, etc. If the theifs are in a hurry those RELAY/CIRCUIT BREAKERs are probably still connected to the battery terminals and will need replaced by you as well...

Just having cut cable ends near your battery installation may need professional help from the local RV place to figure out what is missing.

If you are in a crime zone area a better battery installation in a steel locked metal battery tool box style may be needed. My area where my trailers are parked here at the house have motion detector lights around the area. Both my batteries and the Propane tanks are under locks... All of this wont keep them 100% safe but anything you can come up with to make it more difficult will help out big time. They want easy targets along with quick getaways... Their tool bag includes heavy duty cable cutters and dremel cutting tools... Hard to guard against those two items...

Batteries and Propane are big thief tickets around here...

  • I bought one of those two piece metal locking strap thingys to padlock mine down to the trailer frame.

  • If the wire was attached to the frame that's a negative/ground wire. Certainly I would clean up any connections I could while I was repairing .
    Good Luck, Mike

    Can you post a pic?

I have a couple of pics... now, to see if I can get them from phone to computer... will try that when I get home in the morning. No bluetooth here to do the transfer.

    Thanks for the reply!
