Riddle me this.

Hooking up a backup camera in 2014 2500 Ram 5.7 Hemi. When I hook up the camera power to the backup light I get a black shaky picture but when I touch the power cable ends to the battery posts I get a perfect picture. Every thing is the same from the taillight to battery, same feet of RCA cable and everything else. When I check the voltage at battery I have 12.34 volts and voltage at backup light is 12.3 volt. What am I missing?

PS this is with 2 different camera power harnesses.
  • Eeny meenie minee moe. Into the hot lead a 470uf Capacitor must go..

Your ignition switched power circuit is noisy. Ooooooo just think of all the PWM gizmos sharing that Party Line...
  • It must be the hot side since I did try and ground to the truck body which didn't help. Think I will see if my trailer light plug is wired for backup lights and pull power from there if it is. I don't think the lights are LED plus I don't even have the bulb connected at this point. Geez an easy project that turned into a pain since I ended up pulling the RCA cable from under the truck and the monitor wiring harness to check all the wires so now I have to wire the hole thing again but before I do I will make sure I have a good pic.
  • If you can use your jumper cables and a piece of wire, first try bringing the positive to the back and see if that helps. If not, try bringing the negative. It could be either the feed or the return.
  • The line to the back up light must be picking up a lot of "noise". If the backup light is a LED the LED will generate a lot of noise.

You could try a small filter capacitor from the connection point to ground. About .1 uF should help.
