Rogue 30A controller in front storage space?
Have just just received it new MPPT 3048. It is solid. Perhaps too solid ;) - bigger than I thought. 4.5" thick, 8x8.5" front. With this amperage it can't be smaller, and 45A unit from Morningstar is thicker yet, and less esthetically pleasing. The plan was to put it on night table of the front bedroom, but now I think to move it to storage. Not just for looks - though black would've blend better in wood-ish interior - but I also don't want it to be a space heater on a hot sunny day.
Controller front:
. There are 4 buttons under the display, Android phone comes out of focus at times.
Back:
. You can see the fins of the heat sink, they are not flush with the back. When installed on vertical wall (as Rogue recommends), there is 0.5" gap from the wall, which might not sound like a lot, but it creates thermal draft upwards, similarly to fridges. Very clever.
Front storage I think to put it:
- the space is 8ft long across the trailer, 3ft wide, about 1.5ft tall. The batteries I will also move there, they are AGM so no problem with gassing, and ventilation registers will be added - like those on storage of some 5-ers. Registers won't help with heat build-up, they are for gassing (which won't be much anyway). On 5-ers people put everything in there - controller, inverter, batteries - though on trailers this is less common.
Marc from Rogue recommends against installing it in "enclosures" unless it has a forced fan ventilation, but I think this storage qualifies as a "room" rather than enclosure. In Japan it would be considered a room :)
Ready to listen to your comments on these crazy ideas.
