The shrink will go down to at least #10 probably 12/14. I assume you have #8 in one end and 2x #12 in the other so I think it would be fine.
Shrink should last years (10+?) in the sun.... and I thought you were committed to the box to prevent roof water intrusion. Will last indefinitely in the box. Could also combine wire below the roofline or even run the #12 pair all the way to the controller. Could get some UV solar wire (#10) with MC4 connectors and use MC4 parallel connectors to combine. Lots of options.
Direct burial kit may not be UV resistant. Although black materials are often superior to colored in my experience.
