Satellite only works connected directly to DVR

I have a Winegard Carryout Portable Satellite. All of a sudden it will only work when connected directly to the DirecTV DVR. It will search and search but says it finds no satellite (signal strength...

The dish has to connect to the Direct TV box. You can not hook the dish directly to the TV. The box is what detects and reads the signal.
