Hi Jim,
If I were 100% full time, and had no shore power at all, I think a generator would be pretty much a good idea. But I'll be not be using the RV from November 10, 2013 until December 9, 2013. That gives quite a few days for the solar to put back in energy. I'll be "finished" with the December trip on December 14, 2013. Next use will be on January 7, 2014.
On December 21, shortest day of the year, with overcast skies I got at least 17 amp-hours. I know that is not nearly enough to "break even" on the usage I'll encounter.
I do get 3 amps during rain from my existing system.

Tuna,
Do they have clouds where you plan on being? I have 800 watts of solar on the roof of our coach and when the clouds roll in the generator gets started. Solar is dandy but totally unreliable for a constant daily source of power. Summer sunny days I get as much as 42a output for a few hours in the middle of the day. On a cloudy/rainy day maybe 5a-10a. We are close to the Canadian border so probably further South than you are going to be. I would not rely on solar unless you are going to be somewhere in the South.
