Hi,
My first class C was a 1987 diesel 6.9 liter. The storage facilities have no powered sites in Regina. Starting it in below freezing weather, required the block heater to be run for about three hours. A generator was an essential item. I purchased a Kipor instead of a Yamaha because the local Yamaha dealer wished to charge me for shipping a unit from Winnipeg to Regina. The Kipor required service 4 times over the ten years I owned it.
When I got my new to me class C in 2009, I immediately started looking for a smaller electric start generator, one that would fit in the pass through storage. I found one, purchased it, and was even able to pull start it. Unfortunately the electric starter was misaligned--so I took it in for service. After it was repaired the mechanic put it outside to test it. After 15 minutes the unit stopped running--and when he went to look at it, it had burst into flames.
I decided that I should "test" the pass through storage. I put a gas can in the RV. The next day gas fumes could be smelled inside. So I abandoned the idea of a small generator.
In the mean time the Kipor had gotten heavier, and even though I had a ramp to get it on the rack, I was considering a "come along" to winch it into place.
I was on a trip to Florida and was at Devils Lake ND in February. The purpose of the trip was to see one of the last Shuttle launches. It was -25 C and the Kipor started fine. However, instead of doing it's rated output of 2800 watts, it would stall out at around 900 watts. It clearly was failing. I phoned my mechanic and he said I should move on to something else.
I found the boily generator and researched it. It had a Yamaha engine so I thought it would be reliable about starting. With days the screws started to rust--and it was totally unreliable. It would stop for no apparent reason, and cold weather starting (-1 c or 30 F) was poor. I also could not return it as the boxes had been left behind in Florida, and that was one of their "requirements". It was louder than the Kipor when it would start.
While the Efoy is wonderful technology, the cost of fueling it is astronomical. It is also not totally quiet. Methanol makes gasoline look like Kool-aid as far as being safe to work with.
I'm going to be urban boondocking. Silence is golden. I'm going to be doing it for many nights and will rotate from place to place.
