I just think of it as a series of water pumps, each of which adds its own pressure to the incoming pressure it sees. What comes out of the last pump is the sum of those individual pressures, even though they may all be different.
But why is each at the particular pressure it is at, and why are they all each's Vmp? Of course if it were any other voltage, the question would still be, "Why that voltage in particular?"
If the controller has to use the lowest amps to get the most watts then you could not get total rated Vmp. But you do!
Each panel's watts is its rated Vmp x Imp, but you don't get the higher rated Imps in the string just the lowest one. So you can't get the total rated watts by adding all the Vmps because you don't have enough Imp for the Vmp x Imp.
But somehow, the controller display shows the Vmp is the total of the rated Vmps.
