Check back earlier in this discussion: I did mention the auto that I had during college with a crank starter that I actally had to use a few times and another auto I had during college that was so under-powered that I had to back it up hills because reverse was a lower gear than first gear.
The car with a crank was a 1956 MGA with it's twin six volt batteries and a (Lucas?) electric fuel pump behind the two bucket seats, canvas side curtains that lifted off, and a canvas taneau cover.
The car with the low reverse gear was a split screen convertible Morris Minor, that probably had an engine crank ... too.
P.S. I once was the navigator in a friend's Triumph TR3 roadster during a desert time-and-distance road rally that he nearly got us killed in!
Oh ... I almost forgot ... when I was a youngster I used to wake up to the sound of steam engine trains in the railroad switching yard across the river from our house!!
