Shower head valve

When I shut off the shower sprayer valve, then soap up turn back on the water is very hot for a bit any way to fix it.

  • I installed check valves at the shower mixing valve on both our previous and current motorhomes. No more hot or cold blasts and our Camco shower head has a positive shut off that helps to conserve some water when boondocking.
  • This is the second mh that we have had that the shower head dribbles. On both of the mh I have garden hose to pipe adopters and added a garden hose valve, which shuts the water complety off at the head. Now the water is cool because it cools off in the pipe while turned off. We can live with that.
  • The switch to cold is probably due to the anti-scald valve defaulting to cold. Can't get scalded by cold water - only shrinkage.

Same here. Dribbling, and then cold for the first few seconds after I open it again. Not very cold, just cold-er.

Unlike the first reply I happen to have a degree in the proper science.

That said I won't explain what is happening, no need

the problem is you TOTALLY cut off water flow.. now Oxygenics has what they call the "Smart Pulse" valve and the valve I got at Mennards is like it,, Both of these do not totally stop the flow, they cut it down to a dribble, but they don't stop it.. The result is I don't get teh hot/cold blast when I re-start

So that's the solution, cut off to a DRIBBLE,, with time you will figure out just how much of a dribble.
  • Most shower shutoff valves leave a trickle going that keeps the water mixed. Try leaving a little flow going.
  • I'm not a physicist, but I suspect the problem comes from the fact when you shut off the sprayer valve, you still have both hot and cold valves open. The water heater just got a shot of cold water in it so the fire's come back on. The cold water in the heater begins to expand pushing hot water past the shower valve and having nowhere else to go, it pushes the cold water back down the plumbing. I know it is a closed system however, RV hot water tanks are made with a 'air pocket' at the top to accommodate expansion of the water and with the shower sprayer configuration, I suspect water can easily 'move around' in the plumbing with the cold water at the shower being pushed back towards the cold inlet at the water heater filling a substantial part of the cold water line with hot water, scalding you when you open the shower spray valve again. I, too, have noticed this phenomenon and this was the best reason I could come up with. Anyone else care to post a better explanation?
