which part of the shower do I replace? the split part (no leaks yet) or the whole thing. maybe as a temp measure we can swap it for the seldom used external shower. thanks all

Yup. You can do it for $6. I too would suggest the Oxygenics at $32. A great upgrade and worth the extrqa $26.
