Slide Out Operational Question?

I've used TT and FW for about 30 years now, and you'd think I'd be experienced enough to know the answer to the question below. But, I've never thought to ask it on the forum before. My dealer's service guy said it was not an issue, but I have my doubts.

When operating my slide outs (motor driven, not hydraulic) I get a clack-clack-clack sound when I get the slide all the way in or all the way out. This drives my crazy and I think I'm going to damage something when this happens. So I'm real darn careful to make sure to let go of the switch the instant the slide is all the way in or out. So the question is: does the clack-clack-clack hurt anything if I hold on to the switch too long?

  • The clacking is NORMAL. You run the room until you hear the first clicking/clacking. Then stop. That noise is the clutch. NORMAL noise and no harm will occur as long as you stop after the first second or so. Doug

Good question Jim, I'm looking forward to some knowledgeable answers.

I am pretty sure it is not a good idea to run your landing gear all the way up, with a lot of "clacking", so you'd expect the same answer with the slide.

I also let off the slide button, as quickly as possible.

Landing gear clacking is due to bevel gears slipping which can damage gears and /or shear pins

Electric slide clacking can damage motor clutch spring washers.

  • Once the slide is all the way out/in the clutch will slip making the clack noise. I was told to run mine out/in till I hear the clack and then let go of the switch. I too am not found of the noise. I try to minimize the clack.
  • YES.......

Motor clutch is slipping. Spring washers are used to activate clutch. The more they are stressed by over running (clack-clack-clack) the less tension until they loose all tension and clutch no longer engages.
