'Smart' charger playing dumb

My NOCO charger has a red light when I first connect it up, which changes to green. Presumably to indicate 'done'.

But, thanks to you folks, I have a nifty cheapo ammeter.

Turns out, when the light turns green the battery is still absorbing at a couple of amps. And If I leave it hooked up, the charger will keep outputting those couple amps, then 1.5, then 1...

All these years, I had no idea that I was getting a deeper charge when I hooked up my ancient car charger with builtin dial ammeter and took it down to 1.

Oh well, my gel cels are 9 years old. They must not hold it against me.

  • "Smart Charger" manufacturers are "smarter" than the people who buy their product.

Intelligence and Vigilance are two different things.

You used intelligence when you doubted the "smart" light and checked for yourself.

If a person believes a nineteen cent integrated circuit can automatically "analyze" and react (control) an electro-chemical process, I have some land with a beautiful view of the underside of a bridge just "perfect" for them...

    Sometimes looks are deceiving.

Part of the current flow from the charger might be going to other devices that are still connected.

Also cheap ammeters are notoriously inaccurate and easy to mis-read.

  • Nice discovery. You'll definitely want to know whats happening with a charger when you move up to the new AGM's.
