From the picture it appears you have a solenoid valve in the gas line. Also, it looks like the upper wire, the ground lead is corroded and deteriorated. That would be the first thing I fixed. Any time I see tape I consider there may be a wiring issue. Do you have a meter to see if there is power at the solenoid valve?
