Right, I am 99% sure at this point it is a solenoid. A brief internet search yielded several similar solenoids for methane and propane setups. I think it's just outdated tech that isn't commonly used anymore. (Pre LP detector) I'm sure since new rigs come with LP detectors a solenoid would be a moot point.
And no you aren't the only one to think just replacing the section of pipe would be the easiest fix. :) When I get some extra cash I may just replace the majority of the exposed pipes underneath as they are 30 years old and pretty beat up.
