Solar AC

I was trolling around you tube and found someone running a 5000 btu AC off of their solar system. Most of the time he was loosing the battle or at best keeping even.
The second video was commercial and linked to this. solar ac

They are running it off of 3 180w panels and it has the battery and CC inside.

This is the video video of a 10,000 btu unit and they say they have 16,000 BTU.

So if you can have 5-600w of solar dedicated to AC, you have it made. :)

  • My trailer barely stays cool with 13.5k BTU. 5000 BTU? I would need three.
The other benefit to 3000w of panels will be the shade they create over the RV.

I don't have the AC AMP draw in front of me but I don't think a 5000BTU Air conditioner is going to draw alot of amps at 120VAC. Probably in the 4-5 AC AMPS range...

ADDED NOTE: I just picked up these two window air conditioners this year for the house

    WESTPOINT 5000BTU model
    120VAC @ 4.8AMPS

    WESTPOINT 8000BTU model
    120VAC @ 5.94AMPs

  • You have to consider solar output takes a dramatic drop in output when its cloudy. The panel output ratings are under ideal labratory conditions and are not necessarily what they will do out in the real world on a day to day basis. I have a 800w solar system on my coach and it does not produce anywhere near 800w most of the time. Sometimes it will show 41-42a output other times less than 10a - depends on the weather.
