Timer based solar recharging is just guessing. I don't see the point in spending extra for MPPT if you're just guessing at what your battery needs. The gain you might see in efficiency is wasted because you don't really know what your needs are or how to achieve them. Spend less on a PWM controller that runs through a shunt with a meter that monitors your battery needs and provides a charge based on those needs.
