By status you mean state of charge? Then you need a battery monitor or something resembling it. Volts and amps - that you asked about - are very crude indicators of battery state of charge.
To monitor battery SOC, a device must measure AH in both directions, not just volts and amps. $14 gizmo in my link and $36 in Mex link "look" like being capable of this job. You won't get an accurate V/A meter (i.e. for measuring volts and amps only) for less than $10, anyway.
