Solar Contraptions-Twirlers and Floppies

Here are my latest version contraptions for 2014. Eat your hearts out!

Some may remember my previous attempts at both styles. This year I have repeated the 2012 floppy for the 130w panel except now on the ground instead of on the roof.

I have improved last year's twirler for the then two 100w panels by changing to a more sturdy pedestal, a 230w panel, and by adding some "notches" and a swing up hinged board, so it can have a variety of tilt angles as well as being twirled. I use the low tilt for when pointing South mid-day and the higher tilt for when pointing SE or SW when the sun is lower.

For further entertainment there is a photo of the two controllers (Eco-Worthy and Solar30) and a mess of wires, with four of the six batts showing (two Exide 6s are off to the right).

I can close and lock the front cargo bay door because the wires going outside go through that cable hatch I put in the door.

I added a wire across the top of the twirler so robins would not perch there and poop down the panel so much.

Here is the old way with the floppy on the roof. The same two inverters and charger are now farther in the cargo bay behind that board behind the batteries.

Anyway, that is how it is "done" so you are all playing catch-up, especially with my wiring job. :)

  • I can "store" the 130 in its tray on the trailer roof and the bits and pieces to make the tray a floppy can go anywhere handy. In fact the 130 has gone back up there, using the roof solar connections, for the next few months while we have too much solar for June-mid-August. It gets the "flat" results (given in that link above) while there.

The 230 and twirler (which is three pieces bolted together-easy assembly) has to go inside the trailer. Panel goes up on the bed or behind the sofa (we have the movable sofa and table and chairs version in the slide-out instead of the fixed furniture version)

We have not travelled anywhere with the solar so it is not an issue for us. It all goes up-Island in the trailer to our site mid-April and back home end-September. If we go anywhere during that time, just the 130 on the roof goes. It stays there strapped down as shown no problems.

From Oct to mid-Apr all solar stays home in the garage. It is no use for camping here in winter under the trees in provincial parks.

A pair of pine slats and C-clamps.

Where do you store all of that for travel?
  • Now you just need to train the dog to move the panel properly on command ;)
  • No new info on Eco-W absorb stage. I would need to try it on just one pair of 6s instead of four 6s I guess. Maybe Jim can run that test.
  • ROTFL!

Thanks for the carpentry lesson, BFL13.

BTW, did you and/or Jim ever decide if the Eco-W did the abs stage and for how long or was it just included in the bulk stage?

I started with laundry baskets, but have since moved to higher tech!
