It will work with panels wired in parallel. Parallel wiring at 30A current would require a beefy cable #6 or #4. Panels have 6.1A Isc, so this 30A controller will allow 4 panels max.
One of reviews notes that Schneider/Xantrex 35A is a better choice, and I agree. Costs only slightly more, a remote temperature sensor can be added for $25 (and highly recommended). Better features and quality.
Solar should better be done right the first time. Installing 3 panels, then realizing that you need more, adding more - then buying a bigger controller, possibly replacing the cable with beefier one yet. Unless there are placement problems on the roof, 450W is done better with 2*250W panels and 35-40A MPPT - not PWM. Thin #10 cable will handle it in series, and if another 250W is added later, #10 cable will still work.
what part about PRE EXISTING did you not see
why should he replace the existing panels

he just needs to replace the controllers
