People have very different real world use cases and the controllers (PWM and MPPT) actually can function quite differently from one another, even when they claim the same benefits. Nothing like testing with your actual equipment and conditions!
That's why I got the $10 buck converter - a way to test the difference between PWM and the theoretical best MPPT output. Now how to test the difference between MPPT theoretical best and a given MPPT controller's actual performance? That's a bit harder. Getting an idea of how frequently the controller scans for the max power point, and whether it disconnects to check Voc is a start anyway.
