I decided against MPPT for my system when I installed it over 3 years ago. Have never regretted it for one second. I did go with a programmable PWM controller, however, since I wanted one that would allow me to use a set point of 14.8v for my 6v batts. At the time I don't recall the cheaper PWM controllers being available (Landstar, etc.), and even if they were I may not have gone that route because of the inability to use a set point of 14.8v (someone correct me if that's wrong).
I think MPPT makes sense for some people, just not for my particular case. I only needed 200w and my panels tilt. I've never run short of power, not even once. The bottom line for me is this: Can I dry camp without running out of power and without drawing my battery bank down more than 50%? Yes. So MPPT would have been money down the drain for me.
