FWIW, my generators do not make (much) stench and noise at all. In addition other campers around us understand, expect, and accept built-in big generator usage when it's 95 degrees-on-up outside. In addition, other campers can't hear or smell a 650 watt four cycle Honda charging batteries every third day either ... or at least we can't hear or smell our traveling companions' generator (also a 650 watt four cycle Honda) when they're camped right next to us.
IMHO, solar is not the end-all and be-all either - especailly so if you want hot weather protection.
For merely keeping RV batteries maintained for off-grid camping, an onboard fuel cell system that quietly and automatically keeps them charged is the ultimate approach -> similar to how the marine world takes care of their batteries off-grid regardless of weather or time of day.
