Solar Panel Effectiveness Thru Tinted Glass

I would like to hook up my 5-watt solar panel (and charge controller) to my batteries to keep them charged when stored during the relatively mild western Washington winters. I would like to place the panel inside, but my TT has tinted glass windows and I am not sure how effective this would be since the panel wouldn't be getting full sunlight. (I could put the panel outside, but then it might get stolen, or damaged by rain.)

Anyone have any experience doing something like this?

Thanks
  • 5-watts is bare minimum under the besr of circumstances. IMHO assume nothing. Double-check battery voltage after a couple of weeks.
  • Panels under tinted glass or 'covers' will likely register voltage, but it's the amperage you're interested in.

Personally, I think simply disconnecting your fully charged batteries would be about as good as a 5w panel under glass.
  • Hi,

It depends where you live. In my location about 13 watts per 100 amp-hours of storage is needed. This is not enough to equalize the battery bank. For that 60 watts per 100 are the bare minimum.
  • It amuses me to see recommendations for 100 watt or more for just stored battery maintenance. You only need the equivalent of a trickle charger and you can get a 15w panel with controller for about the same price. I suspect tinted glass will reduce effectiveness somewhat so I am not sure a 5w panel will work, but be sure to use the battery disconnect to eliminate most parasitic draw.
I would say to just put it in place and monitor your battery for a while to see if it will do the job. If not, go for a 15w or so.
  • I have been using 2 9-watt panels for many years. They sit on the front dash under the bed overhang of my Class C. One panel for chassis battery and the other for house batteries (2 T105's) . They keep the batteries fully charged during the five months of storage.

They are placed by front window on overhead bed during camping season. They are on 24/7.
  • I posted a similar question just recently concerning trickle charging my batteries while in storage, albeit not with the tinted glass factor involved & here's the answers I got.

    MY POSTING
  • Ours works under a cover!
Just to make sure, install the panel and check the voltage.
