The cells are connected in series, starting at one end and over, up, back across, up etc. The beginning and end are routed to the box. But near the box are the intermediate wires (as in up on that side of the panel). Therefore it's a a short run to add a jumper for the intermediate wires. A 4x9 cell array would have one additional wire and hence 2 diodes while a 6x10 cell array would have two additional wires and hence 3 diodes.
