OP here.
I guess that is another way of posing my original question. If I understand the theory correctly, the ideal would be to have a bypass diode for each cell, not each row of sells -- that way I would lose shaded cells, not shaded rows or blocks.
From what research I've done, it seems like nominal 12-volt panels usually have 3 diodes dividing 4 rows of cells. Are they all this way? Or how do I tell if a panel has more or less than 4, other than contact the manufacturer?
