To expand on BFL13's comment. Another factor is the cost in watts/dollar. 24V panels are about half of 12V panels.
In 2014 my cost for the 3 panels, installation and the higher end MPPT 60 controller was $100 more than the equivalent watts 12V parallel panel installation. For me that was a no brainer decision.
Those with existing 12V panels often reach a different conclusion.
