It goes into float mode about noon or shortly thereafter every day. It powers a couple of lights and my cell phone charger. That is my definition of "reliable source of 12 DC power". Has nothing to do with setpoints or temp.
I simply asked what was the best way to store the system unattended for a few months at a time.
One of those questions that are often asked and often answered.
You can't really store wet batteries with no floating charging for a few months at a time without affecting their life.
And you can't store system on floating charge with wrong setpoints without affecting battery life either. Lights and cell phone charger have nothing to do with this, they will run on anything from 12 to 15V.
Wrong float voltage = battery life goes downhill.
Equalizing kicks in when not needed = same result.
No temp comp = wrong float voltage = same result.
Controller stops working, passes full 18V from panels or passes nothing at all = same result.

Good news is that with only lights and cell phone charger your 2*6V will serve you well even after they've lost most of their capacity due to all the reasons above, or are less than 30-40% charged.
