solar

Is it necessary to install a cutoff switch from the solar panels before the controller? I know one is needed for the battery side. Also if so can you use regular breakers for solar or are they just for AC and not DC

  • I've always been a little different.
If I wanted to turn something off and on, I'd use an off/on switch.
  • Square D QO series breakers are rated for DC use up to 48 volts. That's what I would use since they are inexpensive and readily available.
I would install the breaker on the PV input so you will have a disconnect for service.
  • I suppose it would, if you didn't use it too much. Pretty cheap.
  • I found this one, Should work?

I don't think that will work the panels put out 38Voc each and 255W each. It's rated for 12V

My panels put out 24v at 18 amps total and this breaker works just fine as a cut off switch. If I needed a circuit breaker then I would use something rated for said voltage and amperage.
  • Necessary? No. Convenient for service, Yes.
The switch, breaker or fuse should be rated for DC at the proper voltage.

  • Good idea to put BOTH PV input AND battery output on disconnects. Some times when upgrading firmware & such you have to kill power on both sides.
  • It is if you want to do any work on the system when the sun is shining on your panels. I wouldn't disconnect the controller from the batteries while the array is hot.
