The inverter idling probably uses a good bit more power than a continuous duty solenoid; many are around 1/2 to 1 amp DC (though it does vary quite a bit from model to model). That said, any continual drain is something to be aware of. Charging the phones and laptop will definitely be more efficiently done with 12V chargers than with the inverter and a 120V charger.
You could use a latching relay that only powers the coil to switch on and off, as used in the house battery disconnect system.
