Hey, go easy on your adopted grandson. He's having a pretty rough day. :)
3 posts up, gramps. Right after you asked. I didn't realize the mention on pg. 1 was a question.
I do not notice any different sounds when cranking. She sounds just like she's supposed to... including recollection from my youth when my father had a 427 L88 in a v-drive drag/ski boat with no transmission. In and out only. For the kiddos we would always bring the ski rope around and shut 'er down. Then start 'er when the kid was ready. Heard that sound many, many times.
But I digress...
I really hope I'm missing something. Otherwise I may be in trouble, here.
The timing test should work for the 180 deg from #1 cylinder too, right?
So I was working on getting it to #1 when she stopped right where what looked like #6, i.e. 180 deg off from #1. I checked and sure enough. The rotor is just a few degrees ahead of #6. The following 2 photos were taken, pretty much from the top down. You can see I put a scratch in the base of the distributor where #6 is. It also lines just about up with a molding hill just inside there.
Then look at the groove on the balancer. The top of the photo is the front of the engine and we have a clockwise rotation, right? The groove's at nearly 12:00. The gauge BEGINS way over to the left (driver's side.) It looks like a good 25 deg before the gauge... which probably starts at at least 15 or 20 BTDC.
What say you?
