For the scratch, I had the distributor on. I scratched the side of it directly underneath #6. Then I removed the cap and brought the scratch mark on up and over. It's very nearly dead on 180 degrees from #1. The rotor is just a few degrees ahead (right) of it.
Can you see how far off the (rusty) balancer mark is to the right (ahead) of the (also rusty) gauge to the left? The balancer mark is near 12:00 in the photo.
If it's in time, at 180 deg, the balancer should be 360 deg ahead and right back to within the gauge, right?
