So you're saying there was a scratch near the base by the clamp bolt but yet you couldn't turn it back without loosening the bolt?
Thinking further, it would have retarded the timing if the rotor struck the cap and spun the distributor from the inside. It would effectively knock the cap position further from the rotor position. If yours was advanced, something else must have happened.
