I did try it, though. Was curious if I could discover slop in the chain that way.
Because it's in a doghouse with no grill visibility, I need an assistant to either crank or watch the rotor if I pull the plugs and crank by hand. That said... when I would crank 'er over via the starter to try and get 'er to land on TDC, the rotor sure seemed to have zero slop. When it would run up against compression and turn backwards a bit, it would just seem to do so perfectly tightly. Perhaps it would do that with a loose chain, I don't know.
