45,000 volts is nothing to sneeze at. It is 1000000000000000000000000 times as important to make sure the mechanical and advance curves are EXACTLY factory spec. Getting the spark to the plugs is critical. I like JACOBS wires because they don't leak. On a pitch black night open your hood start your engine let your eyes adjust then look for tiny yellow sparks between wires or to engine.

2 parts to respond to here.
1. Is this the post where you answer whether or not I should replace the distributor with the basic, OEM unit vs some other, modern type of distributor?
Also...
2. I'm confused. It just occurred to me that... when I had zero fire... and had the rotor within a couple of degrees of #6, i.e. 180 deg off of #1, the notch in the balancer was something like 45 deg BTDC (see bottom photo below.)
Without thinking... I turned the dizzy counterclockwise (more advanced) to get her to start.
After that... I had to continue to rotate it counterclockwise, for the most part, to keep it running. And believe me... I tried turning it both ways.
At some point it seemed like the only way to get 'er to run was to rotate to a position where she would knock under a little strain. Painful, but... it was that or nothing.
After a hard climb that she barely made... we headed down the other side. This was followed by a gentle climb... where she finally gave up the ghost.
Note the notch here. I had thought it had advanced and made this notch. So I moved it back and she started. It hadn't occurred to me at the time (so tired) that... by moving it back (counterclockwise,) I was actually advancing further.
Below that is the photo I had shown on pg 3 of the (rusty) balancer notch some 45 degrees advanced with the rotor on #6 (180 deg from #1.)
