My alternator rebuilder.
They're an alternative power outfit with some pretty cool hydro stuff. Thought you might find their website interesting.

Said the stator was cooked and some connections fried.
Lot of coincidences here, Mex. Here they are in order of occurrence...
1. Distributor failing. Predetonation the result. Added heat on the back side of the fan perhaps?
2. Charging gauge irregularity first noticed. Pulled over immediately to find no charge to chassis battery. Fired up generator to run ignition. Stator later diagnosed as "cooked."
3. An hour or so later... fan clutch begins to stick in the engaged position.
When I pick up the alternator I'll ask him just what he meant by "cooked." Was it just cooked over time or was it due to higher than normal heat.
The only current wrench in my theory is I don't recall the fan clutch sticking on 'til well AFTER the alternator quit on me. BUT... perhaps it was coming on a fair amount earlier on and just got worse after the alternator died. That was about 8 months ago. My rememberer don't work quite like it used to.
Will be interesting to hear what my rebuilder says this afternoon.
