GM CRIMPED the stator leads to the #8 ring terminals that fit the rectifier. They should have been soldered. One bad connection throws the stator WYE into imbalance which overheats the other two phases. Cooked stator windings are no longer translucent mahogany colored. They burn black and the destroyed varnish flakes off the bare copper.
Then the OE smoke and mirrors "turbine" fan spins in circles and does nothing.
Politely inform your rebuilder if he refuses to cough-up the name of his Warehouse distributor, I shall but a curse on his voltage regulators, dooming him to endless comebacks. Heh heh heh.
BTW the large frame Ford 70-90-100 amp alternators suffer from the same stator lead to ring terminal destruction. These are the old style alternators wit external regulator. Amazing ain't it? Ford and GM now solder all internal connections. I never built an alternator that did not have soldered stator leads.
