NASCAR uses nitrogen for its stability and more predictable expansion in tires as it heats up, and for its dryness in air wrenches. Regular air could just as easily be compressed and stored in the same type of tanks as nitrogen for portability. Replacing the air in a tire with nitrogen is a pretty simple process, involving just releasing any pressure in the tire and then filling it back up with nitrogen to reach a 95-98% nitrogen content. Purging the tire a couple of times will push the percentage even higher. Remember, the uncompressed air in the deflated tire is only 22% oxygen to begin with, and that percentage reduces drastically when a large volume of pure nitrogen is added.
