sperate propane tanks

I purchased an Rv with 2 separate propane tanks, 1 on each side, I ran out of fuel thinking that it would switch over automatically but it didn't. When you have one on each side of the rv are they suppose to automatically change from the empty to the full one just as an rv with 2 tanks going into the same regulator does? One side has the regulator with the handle to flip it over and it will show red when empty on the tank the handle is set for.

  • I don't know the brand. Now you got me wondering if I'm not drawing from both cylinders at the same time when pointing up. I haven't checked this rig that close just going on what my old TT did.

    Just curious......

    What brand reg.?
Never seen one that auto swapped with handle pointing up
  • The farside cylinder (not tank) on roadside/drivers side/left side has a high pressure regulator (30#) that feeds across rig to regulator where pressure is then reduced for service.

Those regs fail.........no flow from that cylinder.

The hoses also have internal ball check valves to shutoff if excess flow (short hose also has one).
If cylinder is valved in too quickly the ball will close. They also fail.

And the auto change-over reg. can fail.

There are two ways to hook up multiple tanks.. The first is the PROPER way far as I am concerned

    Tank 1--Line to---Change over valve with check valves----Line to----Tank 2
And then of course you need REGULATOR
and then following that . . . YOUR STUFF

With this system the change over valve has an Arrow on a control, may be a paddle or a knob. the arrow points to the IN-USE tank. both tanks are valve open When the pressure in the IN-USE tank drops enough the gauge goes RED and the regulator draws off the other tank Flip the knob/paddle, remove the empty (Close the valve first) and re-fill and re-connect.

When the 2nd tank runs empty (you have already opened the first tank's valve of course) flip/turn and .. Well you can figure it out

Option 2, (What they put on my SCAMP

    Tank---line--T---Line---Tank
    The "T" fed the regulator.

    No automatic anything.

  • If both tanks are not connected at the regulator, then no, you must do it.

My 2005 5th wheel is a manual switch-over. At least they put the manual switch-over on the main door side of the trailer...
