Do they need crimping? My small crimper can only take #10, and I recall that big crimpers are expensive. That's why wanted to go for set screw.
Snowman - I saw that thread once, forgot about it, and now again see that it has to be either split-bolt or butt-joint with set screw (like the one from Home Depot in your thread). Don't see any difference, only splice with set screw is easier to insulate. I hoped that my find from McMaster could be a solution, but it's probably just a $3 splice with set screw, plus fancy and leaky housing.
Rincon - those small blocks don't look like weatherproof, and this is outdoor, on the roof, with a lot of UV, so it probably won't work.
Trimming #6 down to #12 is interesting idea. Need to think.
