When you turn the key to Start, given it's in Neutral, you energize the Relay/Solenoid Bud described by the Battery. That one powers the cable to the Starter itself. Cable mounts to the Solenoid on the Starter. The difference between that Solenoid and most others is that it has a jumper built into that causes it to energize whenever the big cable is hot.
Always check both sides of a circuit. By that I mean the ground from battery to chassis, both ends. Did you disconnect the negative? If so, something could have gone wrong. Even inside the "sealed" connection in the clamp.
