Storage door on Newmar Mountainaire vintage 2003 type

One or two of the storage doors refuses to close. Some of the had "tongues" that were stuck in so lubricated and they now push in and out well and close and lock well. BUT one and possibly two, the tongue seems to now be well lubricated and pops in and out well with my finger but when I lift the latch up it does stick a little. Anyway, THAT door will not latch to close, Slam it, left handle up and push down to close but does not latch at all. IS there a way of moving the latch forward so it will latch on to the bar that it should catch onto? This is a new rig to me, 2003 Newmar MountainAir with gas engine and 2 slides. Beautiful unit but some little glitches, brought home yesterday. I have got to get it inspected but with the stair staying out and this door not closing I am not taking it out of the yard to get inspected here in MA.

  • The bar that the tongue is supposed to hit was bent down a little so bent it (had help) and closes like a dream!!
  • You might be able to use brake clean to clean them. Use the small straw to aim alongside the slide latch portion into the housing. Then use a quality chain type lube.
  • Engine maintanence was done regularly BUT this rig sat for the summer and fall. It is in pristine condition inside and mostly outside was well but..... I cannot afford problems. Will look at the bar that the tongue is supposed to catch on to see if it is bent. I think it is the actual mechanism is dirty and it looks like from the underside of the door I can unscrew the cover and clean it. It drives like a dream so far!
  • Had one compartment on mine where the bar appeared to have been bent, probably from being banged when previous owner loaded or unloaded the compartment. Was able to bend it back with firm, steady pressure with channel lock pliers so that door would latch properly again. Compare the bar location with those in other compartments. Parts, including complete latches, are available from Newmar. I usually receive my orders in 2 or 3 days. If you can't find it on their website, send them an email or call. They are EXTREMELY helpful. I needed a part for the crank mechanism on one of my windows. The manufacturer was out of business, but one of their parts folks hunted down the part for me.
  • I agree but it would not close so was trying to get it to close so I could continue to drive without losing the door by passing car etc so did try slamming but like to close gently or close with Latch up and close and put latch down and it should latch but.... HOPEFULLY this is not going to be a bad purchase. So far the stairs would not go in due to ?? bad house batteries and this.
  • I removed my latches, cleaned them good, lubricated with quality grease and then re-installed. JR products model 10935 is what I have. You can see at their web site how the unit looks inside the compartment door.
RV designer has some also. part number E521, E523 and E525
Neighbor had some that they had destroyed slamming doors.
The springs between the strike plunger and housing could be full of dirt and debris.
No offense but I do not allow compartments to be closed by slamming. Yes, some are called slam latch.
