Suburban furnace issues

Working on my suburban furnace can't find a model number anywhere, looks like an NT16 or something close. Got all the mud wasp nests cleaned out and hooked it up on the bench. The fan kicked on for about 30 seconds then slowed down a bit and that's when The wires started to glow orange coming from the battery(probably should've had a fuse in there). Fried the red yellow and green wires going to the time delay relay. Any suggestions? I'm thinking the relay since that's where the fried wires stopped.

  • Finally got back to it (12 hour days suck), took out the fan and hooked it directly to the battery. Nothing, switched the wires, nothing, suppose a fan would be a start.
  • fan was running, and slowed down as the wires heated up, about 30 seconds in? That's when the gas solenoid and electronic ignition kick on in my Suburban. wonder if your solenoid is shorted out. when the controller board went to turn it on, short across the battery with no fuse except the supply wires.

get out the multimeter and start measuring resistance here and there. control board is probably shot, if enough current came in to light up the supply wires - it ruined whatever else it flowed through.

Shouldn't I have had a flame after about 30 seconds though? Besides the one on the wire coating that is. I'll check the fan when I get home.

Not really- there is a time delay built in to most boards- 30 seconds after the blower starts is right around when it should have fired up.

I would double check the hookup- there should be 2 red wires on the relay- power in and power out to the blower motor. The yellow should not be hooked to the relay, yellow and green are both ground- green should be on the relay, and the yellow should be hooked to a terminal block (flag type quick connects).

Yes that, that's just the wires that fried. Shouldn't I have had a flame after about 30 seconds though? Besides the one on the wire coating that is. I'll check the fan when I get home.

Other than that- verify wiring, hook the motor direct and measure current draw, which should be around .7-1 amp lower than the nameplate rating.
  • Hot wires=huge current draw. I would suspect a shorted fan motor for starters.
