Suburban Water Heater

I have a Suburban sw6d WH in my Leakin' Warrior with a fairly regular ignition problem. It seems that every third or fourth light up it seems like the propane mixture in the "flame tube" gets rich so when the igniter goes on a get a loud poof/dull explosion. The igniter seems to be firing fine, good arc and rapid arc. I cleaned the scale out of the flame tube and blew out the burner assembly with compressed air. I know this is an electronically controlled unit but am I having a propane delivery problem or an electric problem? Again it's intermittent, making me a little crazy.
Thanks,
Steve

  • So I cleaned out the burner with a bore snake and used compressed air on the tube from the valve. I have been able to get 15 start ups with no poofs or pops.
    Thanks for all the tips.

Flame on stove is good. Electrode is clean and not corroded. Wire is clean,no corrosion. Burner tube is in factory location so alignment should be spot on. When the wh does ignite it is a clean blue flame.
I will get some pipe cleaners to try on the burner tube.
    Thanks.
    Anything else?

    Spark electrode gap and position

Main orifice could be clogged (doesn't take much)
It is screwed into gas valve right where burner tube attaches.
Remove burner tube......unscrew orifice and clean with alcohol then blow air thru it (no poking wires unless you have cutting torch tip cleaner and it is proper size)

Combustion chamber/exhaust tube can be issue also if dirty......spider webbing, dirt daubers, etc.

Run wire thru....tie rag on end of wire and pull it back thru

  • also check connections on 12v side of gas igniter. they may be corroded
  • Few things to check......

    Burner tube
*Tube needs to be free/clear of obstructions (blowing air doesn't remove spider webs.....bottle brush cleans tube)
*Needs to be aligned with gas valve so that propane flows directly down center of tube
*Spreader at end of tube needs to be centered/squared to end of tube

    Spark Electrode
*1/8" gap between spark and ground rod
    *Spark to ground rod only
    *No cracks in ceramic
    *High tension wire clean/tight connections
****Needs to be positioned directly in flame for proper ignition and flame proofing

    LP Regulator
How do the stove top burners appear.......good steady flame with ALL burners on high. No decrease in flame size when lighting other burners?
    Then reg probably OK.
IF flames diminish in size, change color or are not steady then LP Reg may need adjustment or replacement
