Because i don't want to constantly be drawling from & charging the batteries (if i don't have to).
More importantly - i often DISCONNECT my batteries when on shore power, i don't always rely on the built in converter/charger to maintain my batteries (when in storage)...rather i use an external intelligent battery maintainer (i.e. battery tender / batteryminder).
