surburban sw6p water heater

I have a sw6p water heater that I'm having some issues out of, what is happening is I light the pilot which works fine then move to the on position where sometimes it fires in a few seconds and runs fine but the issues I'm having is at times it takes around 10 seconds to fire which causes a build up of gas which causes it to shoot a large flame which blows the pilot out, what is causing this?

Check for spider webs or dirt dobber nest in the burner tube. That will make it blow back like that. It may need a good cleaning.

Thanks will check that to since I had a dirt dobbers nest in my furnace fan stopping it from spinning.

Get a manual and check pilot posistion to the burner against the spec's and while you are at it clean the burner. What you are having is called delayed ingnition and can cause you to lose your eyebrows :)

    Good Luck

Thanks will do, eyebrows are good I hide from it :-)
